These projects stemmed from the mousetrap racecar project junior year of high school. The idea was to eliminate ground friction for maximum distance. It would have been powered by a battery for hovering, technically not cheating I think. Then forward thrust would be with a mousetrap powered fan or a wheel that contacted the ground and then retracted once it got moving. This proved too complicated so I just experimented with tiny hovercraft. They both worked fairly well, but only on smooth surfaces because of the low airflow.
